Valentines Park's Pet Bahama Teal - By Samuel Bird

If you walk around the Fish Pond at Valentines Park, you are likely to see 3 of these ducks...

The male and female look the same.
They are Anas Bahamensis known as Bahama Pintail, Bahama Teal, White-Cheeked Teal or White Cheeked Pintail.

These very attractive ornamental ducks were pinioned and released into Valentines Park in mid 2010

Roding Valley Park, Woodford:

Hainault, Hannover Gardens:

  • Garden Sightings: Today there were a pair of greater-spotted woodpeckers on the feeders and appeared to be drumming and displaying in the trees (let's hope for the patter of little beaks later in the year),
  • individual sightings and those of green woodpeckers are quite frequent.
  • A Grey heron is a regular fly over, seen most days.
  • We still get up to seven goldfinches regularly and two pairs of chaffinches.
  • Sightings of wrens are also becoming more frequent. (Eddie Barnes)

  • 1 grey heron flying low over the house at 9am with lots of wing feathers missing

  • Sparrows and Starlings squabbling on a neighbour's roof - presumably over a nesting site.

  • South Woodford Section: 1 Little Egret - first sighting this year,
  • 1 Male Kestrel - usual one displaying to a (I think) female soaring much higher up.
  • 1 other bird of prey - a falcon, only a very brief view. Seen in the same area I saw a peregrine at the start of the year...
  • 1 Grey Wagtail.
  • Also: usual Mallards, Moorhens, Crows, Magpies, Woodpigeon, mixed tits, Blackbirds, Robins, Wrens, starlings.
  • No sign of the Fieldfares or Redwings but perhaps not surprising given that the birds of prey (Peter Gordon)
South Woodford:
