  • Green woodpecker seen in Clayhall garden, 12.20 approx. (MScott)
Fairlop Gravel Works:
  • 6 Moorhen were the only 'wildfowl' as it was totally frozen over
  • 1 Grey Heron on the field east of the gravel works
  • c50 Lapwing,
  • grand total of 38 Snipe flushed from the restored field south of the gravel stock pile (site record)
  • 2 male Kestrel having a sparring match mid air - 1 hit the floor, then flew up into a tree, where it joined a Peregrine that was in the tree. after a while the Peregrine flew off low over the site, then into another tree in Hargreaves Scout camp
  • c10 Skylark over
  • also: 1 male Pheasant, Pied Wagtail, 1 Dunnock, c30 Starling, 40 Fieldfare, few Redwing, Magpie and 100 Carrion Crows (DEH)
Fairlop Waters:
  • 250 Canada Geese flew onto the ice (boating lake), landed very poorly, taking out gulls like skittles. It was jokes!. (24 Greylag Geese among them)

Hainault Forest:
  • Three different birds of prey in 5 minutes today...
  • Firstly a Kestrel sitting on top of a lampost when I passed. About an hour later when I came back it was still there. T
  • hen a Buzzard sitting with a Magpie in a small tree opposite Hainault golf course (along with about 20 redwings).
  • About 3 minutes later I saw a sparrowhawk going over the gardens! Great views of the Buzzard. (Peter Gordon)
Hainault Lodge Nature Reserve:
  • 4 Goldcrest, 6 Lesser Redpoll, 2 Nuthatch, Greater spotted woodpecker, 20+ Long tailed tit, Great tit, Blue tit, Redwing, Kestrel. (Bob Abel)
South Woodford:
  • Garden today - 1 Great spotted woodpecker, 6 woodpigeon, 1 Dunnock fighting with a Robin, 3 Blue tit, 2 Great tit, 4 Starling, female blackbird chasing away a male, 2 Magpies and various gulls and crows over. Pied wagtail out the front of the house. (PGordon)

  • c100 White-fronted Goose north-east 14:55 (just as I had given up, cold, wet, bored and longing for a cuppa and having decided not go and flush Snipe from Reservoir Wood, as I stepped on to the flats on the way home ... awesome, bloody magical: so much so I stayed out for another hour and got wet, cold and bored again!), 4 Greylag Geese, 5 Tufted Duck, pr Pochard, 14 Shoveler, Goldcrest, Sparrowhawk and 8 Goldfinch (NC/Birdguides).

Wanstead Park:

  • 50+ Lesser Black-backed Gull moving up the Roding valley in small groups all afternoon, Pochard, Tufted Duck, Teal, Gadwall, Egyptian Goose, Canada Goose, Little Grebe, 50+ Siskin, 10 Linnet (old sewage works), 6+ Goldcrest (NC)

Well done to Nick Croft - White Fronted Goose is the 159th species seen in the borough this year, equalling our tally for 2009... with 9 days left to beat it!

Valentines Park Egyptian Geese - Emma Charles

It appears that we now have 6 Egyptian Geese resident in the borough (2 pairs at Valentines Park, and the 5th bird has found a mate, and relocated to Wanstead Park, where they were seen mating (in the cold) today).

Roding Valley Park, South Woodford:
  • Very good morning at the River Roding SW section. 1 Kingfisher (seen twice), 2 sparrowhawk sightings - not sure if the same bird or not. First time I was trying to take a picture of a wren when there was flurry of starlings and a hawk was about 10 metres above me right over my head. Complete failure to get a picture with the bird showing very well in the blue sky! Later on I found another sparrowhawk - possibly the same one - by the river again. It was in a bush and lots of tits and finches were flying around the bush making a big noise. Eventually the hawk flew off. I was about to go home when I saw Great spotted woodpecker in the small wood. So a very good morning. Also saw 4 cormorant, a Jay bathing in the river, gt, blue and Long Tailed tits, crows, magpies, robins, wrens, chaffinches, woodpigeons, starlings, blackbirds, song thrush. (Peter Gordon)

  • 2 Egyptian Geese perched on the top of an old tree by the pond by the ruin. Possible nest?, 5 Ring Necekd parakeets in 2 small groups.   • 2 juvenline Mute Swan, 3 Greylag Geese and a small skein of Canada Geese over, also a few Mallard over.
  • few Coot on the ice (north side, Painters Road)
  • c70 Lapwing in a few small groups, the main group was in the meadow with 16 Golden Plover, 2 Jack Snipe and c6 Snipe
  • few Meadow Pipits, 1 Skylark 1 Linnet and 1 Goldfinch moving around
  • Sparrowhawk perched on a small bush, then flew to the mound and sat pon the ground for a while.

  • Gulls were mostly Black Headed with a few Common Gulls
  • flock of about 200 Fieldfare and Redwing

  • I've had a Coal Tit visiting my Wanstead garden regularly - it's here now. Also Lesser Redpoll in mixed flocks last week. (Sally Hammond)

  • 2 Goosanders sill present 8am. female only by 1pm
  • 17 Bewicks Swan flew over in formation NW at 1pm (SBa)
Roding Valley Park:
  • Ring-necked Parakeet, 2 Jays, Great Spotted Woodpecker, up to 4 Song Thrushes, flock of Long-tailed Tits, flock of Chaffinches, flock of over a dozen Common Gulls, Cormorant, Green Woodpecker, Woodcock low over the park (AHobson)
