  • Pied Wagtail and Blue Tits along the School perimeter.

Hainault:

  • Healthy number of House Sparrows around Manford Way shops, and 3 Pied Wagtails.

Hainault Forest CP:

  • 2 Mute Swans, 33 Mallard, 12 Tufted Duck, 10 Pochard, 4 Shoveler, 14 Coot, 17 Moorhen on the lake
  • 91 Canada Geese and 1 Greylag Goose feeding on the field by the entrance.
  • Cormorant drying off its wings on the island.
  • Blue Tit, Great Tit, Jay, Chaffinch and Greenfinch around the lake edge.
  • 1 Meadow Pipit (over)

Goodmayes Park:

  • 2 Mute Swan, 55 Canada Geese, 8 Greylag Geese, 60 Mallard, 38 Tufted Duck, 27 Coot and 10 Moorhen on the lake.
  • Cormorant caught a large fish, then flew off with it...
  • 30+ Redwing on the field with a few starlings.
  • Severel hundred Black Headed Gulls, with about 50 Common Gulls and 4 adult Herring Gulls.

Wanstead Park:

Woodford Wells, Pond (by the Police Station):

  • 2 Mallard, 2 Moorhen, 1 Coot,
  • 2 Jay on a tree on the island, chasing off Magpies.
Woodford:
  • 3 Redwings and a Mistle Thrush by Woodford Library. (AH)

Eagle Pond:

  • 6 Mute Swan, 60 Canada Geese most of which were feeding on the grass in Snaresbrook Court, 65 Tufted Duck, 20 Mallard, 45 Coot, 5 Moorhen, 3 male Pochard, 1 Pair of Shoveler and 1 pair of Gadwall.
  • 1 Cormornant flew in and landed in the tree where about 40 Black Headed Gulls were roosting.
  • Great Spotted Woodpecker drumming in the trees behind the lake.

Wanstead Flats:

  • at least 100 Canada Geese.
  • Mallard, Shoveler, Coot, Moorhen all present too.
  • 200 Black Headed Gull and 50 Common Gull on the playing field with a handful of Herring Gulls and a Lesser Black Backed Gull.

Wanstead Park:

  • 6 Little Grebe, Grey Heron, 4 Mute Swan, 78 Tufted Duck, 30+ Mallard, 20 Pochard, 20 Gadwall, 4 Shoveler, 80+ Coot, 20 Moorhen, and distant honks of Canada Geese somewhere over Wanstead! (JL)

  • 150+ Wood Pigeon from the gold course roost. (JL)

  • Mistle Thrush making a racket.
  • Greenfinches and Chaffinches.
  • Cormorant (over).

Claybury Park:
  • At least 4 Great Spotted Woodpeckers, and 1 drumming, and a Green Woodpecker heard calling.
  • A lot of small birds being very active in the wooded areas, especially Great Tit, Blue Tit and Long Tailed Tit.
  • Absolutely nothing on the pond!. Not a feather!
  • Chaffinches and a pair of Bullfinch in the Bushes near the Wensleydale entrance.
  • A very songfull Song Thrush singing at the entrance on Roding Lane North, and another in Hospital Wood.
  • Pair of Mistle Thrushes on the grass area near the entrance on Roding Lane North.
  • Also: Blackbird, Robin, Wren, Wood Pigeon, Stock Dove, Feral Pigeon, Carrion Crow, Magpie, Jay.
Valentines Park:
  • 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, and 2 green Woodpecker (1 drumming)
  • Mistle Thrush being mobbed by Magpies.
  • at least 40 Carrion Crows betweel the Bethel Ave entrance and the pond.
  • Lots of Blue Tits, Great Tits, Chaffinches.

Hainault:

  • 10 Mute Swans (some on the main lake, and some on the landfill site)
  • 160 Canada Geese and 3 Greylag Geese on the golf course.
  • 1 Shelduck on the landfill site (south of Painters Rd)
  • 50 Mallard, spread accross all the ponds
  • 10 Shoveler (all on the landfill site)
  • 98 Teal, 1/2 on the lagoon and 1/2 on the landfill
  • 58 Gadwall, 21 Pochard, 100 Tufted Duck, 42 Moorhen, 120 Coot.
  • 561 Lapwing, mostly on the landfill with 69 Golden Plover and 3 Green Sandpiper... Also 25 Snipe, groups of 11 and 6 on the southern landfill and 8 solitary ones flushed from the nature reserve/northern landfill.
  • 2 Great Crested Grebe on the main lake, and 1 Water Rail in the corner of the fishing lake by the island, also 8 Cormorant.
  • 3 Pheasant around the southern half of the landfill, one was nearly cight by a fox, that stalked it for some time!
  • Rabbit and Brown Hare both seen by the landfill site.
  • 397 Black Headed Gulls, 64 Common Gulls 14 Lesser Black Backed Gulls and 4 Herring Gulls... mostly roosting on the landfill.
  • A huge flock of over 500 Wood Pigeon and other smaller flocks, totalling 795! also, 4 Stock Doves, Collared Dove and 5 Feral Pigeon (over).
  • 29 Carrion Crow, 8 Jay and 27 Magpie, 19 Blackbird, 2 Song Thrush, 2 Redwing, 10 Fieldfare, 11 Robin, 8 Wren, 2 Dunnock, 13 Starling, 18 Blue Tit, 8 Great Tit, 16 Long Tailed Tit, 2 Greenfinch, 3 Chaffinch, 4 Green Woodpecker and 2 Goldcrest.
  • 5 Siskin feeding around the main lake.
  • Flock of small birds on the reserve that included: 5 Goldfinch, 16 Meadow Pipit, 5 Reed Bunting, and a male Yellowhammer.
  • 9 Skylark around the landfill, and a Pied Wagtail.
Knighton Wood:
  • 5 Mallard, 7 Moorhen, 3 Shoveler and 2 male Mandarin on the pond.
  • 1 Kingfisher on the larger pond, and Grey Heron (over).
  • 12 Blue Tit, 8 Great Tit, 6 Long Tailed Tit, 3 Goldcrest, 6 Nuthatch, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Jackdaw, 5 Magpie.
  • Robin, Blackbird, Wood Pigeon, Jay, Carrion Crow.
Bush Wood, Wanstead:
  • 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, Sparrowhawk, 4 Goldcrest and Long Tailed Tits.
Wanstead Park:
  • Pied Wagtail feeding by the kiosk. Grey Heron also fishing there by Heronry Pond.
  • Pair of Red Crested Pochard still present on Heronry Pond along with 30 Pochard, pair of Mute Swan, lots of Tufted Duck and Mallard. (PF)

Eagle Pond:
  • 9 Shoveler and a Cormorant on the pond, with the usual Tufted, Mallard, Swans, Canada Geese, Coot, Moorhen and Gulls...

Wanstead Park:

  • the pair of Red Crested Pochard are still present on Heronry Pond, along with Pochard, Tufted Duck, Mallard, Gadwall, Coot, Moorhen, Little Grebe.
  • Grey Heron stationary at the corner of Perch Pond.
  • Song Thrush singing violently in a bush near the park entrance at Northumberland Avenue
  • Great Tit, Blue Tit and Chaffinch around that entrance too.
  • 5 Egyptian Geese on Heronry Pond (PF)

Wanstead Flats:

  • Kestrel over Long Wood (JL)

Forest Park Cemetery, Hainault:

  • 3 Jackdaws along with a few Wood Pigeons
  • A Mistle Thrush making a good meal of a large worm.

Fairlop Waters:
  • No Mute Swans today, perhaps they are all on the landfill site, they have been incresingly frequenting that area....
  • However, there were 139 Canada Geese, 2 Greylag Geese, 40 Mallard, 30 Pochard, 47 Tufted Duck, 27 Gadwall, at least 55 Teal plus loads of Moorhen & Coot.
  • 4 Little Grebe, (2 on the main lake, and 2 on the fishing lake) and 1 Great Crested Grebe.
  • 4 male Shoveler on the pond on the farmland.
  • There were a few adult Herring Gull on the golf course with over 100 Common Gull, over 200 Black Headed Gull and a few Lesser Black Backed Gulls.
  • 27 Lapwing on the jetty, (didnt have time to check the fields or the landfill)
  • 1 female Pheasant on the edge of the main lake, then flew over to the island.
  • 1 male Pheasant by the stables.
  • large flock of 95 Fieldfare and a single Redwing by the lagoon.
  • 4 Green Woodpeckers, 5 Goldcrest, 10 Goldfinches, 5 Chaffinch, 8 Meadow Pipit, Reed Bunting, Skylark,
  • also: Cormorant, Magpie, Carrion Crow, Jay, Starling, House Sparrow, Robin, Wren, Dunnock, Long Tailed Tit, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Pied Wagtail, Collared Dove.

Valentines Park:

  • 4 Mute Swan, 9 Canada Geese, 113 Mallard, 45 Tufted Duck, 4 Gadwall, 89 Coot and 20 Moorhen.
  • 2 Little Grebe on the lake.
  • 2 Grey Heron on the pond.
  • pair of Mistle Thrush on the playing fields, also Jackdaw, Carrion Crow, Magpie, Wood Pigeon and a flock of over 50 Starling.
  • 5 Chaffinches near the pond, also Blue Tit, Great Tit and Goldcrest.

Chadwell Heath:

  • Sparrowhawk being mobbed by Black Headed Gulls near Chadwell Heath Station, then flying off in the direction of Freshwater Lane. (JMak)

  • Good numbers of Waterfowl: 7 Mute Swan, 132 Canada Geese, 2 Greylag Geese, 26 Mallard, 39 Teal, 29 Gadwall, 40 Pochard, 2 Shoveler, 85 Tufted Duck, 38 Moorhen, 91 Coot, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 5 Little Grebe.
  • 1 Shelduck on the private lake on the farm, and another (or the same one) later, on the landfill site on Painters Road.
  • 512 Lapwing! with 4 Golden Plover and 2 Snipe (on the Landfill site). Another Snipe was flushed on the nature reserve.
  • 191 Black Headed Gull, with a few Common Gulls.
  • 8 Cormorant and a Grey Heron.
  • 194 Wood Pigeon, 4 Stock Dove, 1 Feral Pigeon and 2 Collared Doves.
  • 22 Carrion Crow, 18 Magpie and a Jay.
  • 10 Blackbird, 6 Robin, 3 Wren, 2 Dunnock, 1 Mistle Thrush, 1 Song Thrush, 20 Rewing, 32 Fieldfare, 1 Skylark, 4 Meadow Pipit, 2 Pied Wagtail and a few Starling.
  • 5 Green Woodpecker! and 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker.
  • 2 Kestrel, (1 over the reserve and one on Hainault Road)
  • 1 juvenile Peregrine Falcon hunting over the landfill site, taking a pigeon.
  • 9 Blue Tit, 4 Great Tit, 12 Long Tailed Tit, 3 Goldcrest, 1 Greenfinch, 2 Chaffinch, 1 Goldfinch. (DEH)

Hainault Lodge Nature Reserve:

  • Pretty quiet, except for a Great Spotted Woodpecker, a few Long Tailed Tits and Goldcrests... oh, and loads of Jackdaw and Wood Pigeon.

Hainault Forest:

  • Mute Swan, Canada Goose, 10 Tufted Duck, 10 Pochard, c30 Shoveler, Mallard, Coot, Moorhen.
  • A flock of 47 Meadow Pipit on the field to the east of the lake.
  • Goldcrest, Jay, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Jackdaw.

Wanstead Park:

  • Pair of Red Crested Pochard still present on Heronry Pond, with 34 Pochard. (TH)
  • 2 Teal on Shoulder of Mutton Pond. (TH)

  • 4 Coot, 60+ Canada Geese, 5 Mute Swan, 2 Moorhen, 7 Mallard, 1 male Pochard, 14 Tufted Duck.

Knighton Woods, Woodford Green:

  • 2 Greater Spotted Woodpecker and at least 5 Nuthatches.
  • 2 Stock Doves, quite a few Jay, and Goldcrest.
  • 1 pair of Mandarin Duck on the pond with a few Mallard and Moorhen.
  • Great Tit far outnumbering Blue Tit here too.

Fairlop Waters:

  • 3 Cormorant, (2 on the main lake, and 1 on Fairlop Landfill)
  • 2 Grey Heron on the landfill site.
  • 7 Mute Swan, (3 on the main lake, 2 on the fishing lake and 2 on the Landfill site)
  • 92 Canada Geese feeding on the golf course.
  • Ducks: 25 Mallard, 35 Teal, 18 Gadwall, 35 Tufted Duck, 40 Pochard, plus 89 Coot and 34 Moorhen.
  • 2 Little Grebe and 3 Great Crested Grebe on the main lake.
  • 187 Lapwing and 37 Golden Plover.
  • 1 Snipe, flushed from the landfill site.
  • 159 Black Headed Gull, 18 Common Gull, 3 Herring Gull and 2 Lesser Black Backed Gulls.
  • 2 Pheasant on the fields behind the fishing lake.
  • 1m Kestrel on the lamp column by the main entrance, (usual place)
  • 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker and 1 Green Woodpecker, both near the Riding Stables.
  • 1 Meadow Pipit, 1 Pied Wagtail, 2 Robin, 4 Wren, 1 Dunnock, 27 Blackbird, 34 Redwing, 22 Fieldfare, 37 Starling, 20 House Sparrow, 152 Wood Pigeon, 10 Feral Pigeon, 2 Stock Dove, 1 Collared Dove, 29 Carrion Crow, 12 Magpie, 12 Blue Tit, 6 Great Tit, 13 Long Tailed Tit, 4 Goldcrest, 5 Chaffinch, 3 Goldfinch, 1 Lesser Redpoll.

Fairlop Waters:
  • 300+ Lapwing, spread really thin all over the farmland, quarry, and even on the 5 a side football pitches.
  • Kestrel hunting above Hainault Road.
South Park:
  • 2 Mute Swans, 25 Canada Geese and loads of Gulls on the frozen lake.
  • Mistle Thrush making a lot of noise in South Park Primary School Green.

Wanstead Park:

Fairlop Waters:

  • Though the lakes were mostly all frozen over, there was still a good number of ducks on the small unfrozen bits... 120 Canada Geese, 1 Greylag Goose, 39 Mallard, 20 Pochard, 5 Tufted Duck, 2 Gadwall, 3 Little Grebe, 119 Coot, 28 Moorhen, 3 Cormorant. (No Mute Swans)
  • 5 Teal on the stream!
  • There were 41 Lapwing on the Island and a further 50 on the field east of Hainault Road with 82 Golden Plover
  • Quite a few birds on the reserve: 2 Pied Wagtail, 2 Meadow Pipit, 3 Reed Bunting, 2 Jay, Green Woodpecker, 3 Greenfinch, 2 Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Lesser Redpoll, 3 Great Tit, 6 Blue Tit, 3 Goldcrest, 7 Robin, 2 Dunnock, 5 Wren, 26 Blackbird, Song Thrush, 2 Redwing, 23 Fieldfare,
  • 2 male Kestrels near the golf course, and a female Sparrowhawk hunting by the stream.
  • 1 Pair of Pheasant on the farmland behind the fishing lake
  • Also: 100+BHGull, 50+Common Gull, LBBGull, 26 Carrion Crow, 15 Magpie, 8 House Sparrow, 2 Starling, 8 Feral Pigeon, 226+ Wood Pigeon, Collared Dove.

Wanstead Park:

  • 'The Basin' was about 75% frozen, but in the available water there were Mute Swans, a Canada Goose, plenty of Mallard, Tufted Duck, Coot, Moorhen and Pochard, a few Shoveler and Gadwall and 4 Little Grebes! (DEH)
  • Solitary Grey Heron and Cormorants flew over. (DEH)
  • Goldcrest, Chaffinch, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Long Tailed Tit, Robin and Wren seen around the edges of the Basin, and at least 3 Greater Spotted Woodpeckers. (DEH)
  • Between the Basin and St. Mary's Church there was a small flock of Redwing, less than 20. (DEH)
  • Jays, Jackdaws, Magpies and Carrion Crows all making a lot of noise in the large trees. (DEH)
  • Around St. Mary's Churchyard there was a Greenfinch and at least 2 Nuthatches. (DEH)
  • Also saw LBBGull, BHGull, Wood Pigeon, Collared Dove, Mistle Thrush, Starling. (DEH)
Wanstead Flats:

  • 162 Canada Geese by Alexandra Lake, with Mute Swans, Shoveler, Mallard and over 200 Feral Pigeons. (DEH)
  • 2 Pied Wagtails around the 'shore' of Alexandra Lake (DEH) also 1 at Jubilee Pond (JL)
  • 100s of Gulls on the flats, most of which were Common Gulls.
  • 6 Skylark, 2 Meadow Pipit, Dunnock and 2 Green Woodpeckers on Wanstead Flats. (JL)
  • Grey Heron flying over the Flats, near Centre Road. (JL)

South Woodford:

  • Firecrest seen opposite St. Aubyns School (DBa)

  • Male Goldeneye still present on the main lake, near the club.
  • 30 Gadwall, 30 Teal, 21 Pochard, 40 Tufted Duck, 4 Greylag Geese, 50 Canada Geese,
  • 2 Little Grebe on the main lake, and a Great Crested Grebe on the fishing lake.
  • 20 Cormorant, 50 Common Gulls, 10 Herring Gulls, 100s of Black Headed Gulls
  • Male Stonechat, 5 Meadow Pipit, 2x Pied Wagtail, Green Woodpecker.
  • At least 3 Skylark on the field behind the fishing lake.
  • On the field to the east of Hainault Road there were about 100 Golden Plover and over 500 Lapwing, with a further 45 Lapwing on the main lake.
  • 30+ Fieldfare, and smaller numbers of Redwing feeding around the reserve.
  • An abundance of Long Tailed Tit, Blue Tit, Robin, Wren, Dunnock and Goldcrest.
  • 2 Kestrels hunting (unsuccessfully as far as I could see)
Bush Wood, Wanstead:
  • Tawny Owl in Bush Wood (evening) (JL)
